December 02 - 09, 2018
April 13 - 20, 2019
Explore the untouched eastern shores of Cuba.
The eastern half of Cuba, know as The Oriente, is often considered Cuba’s most interesting region because of its physical beauty, its cultural diversity, and its historical significance. Surprisingly, it is also the least traveled region of the country by visitors. With its Afro-Cuban origins and its history as the cradle of Cuba’s numerous revolutionary movements, The Oriente offers photographers endless opportunities to discover and experience the unexplored Cuba with their cameras. For a complete understanding of the life in Cuba, a visit to The Oriente is essential.
Our 8-day cultural exchange will start exploring urban life in Cuba's second largest city, Santiago de Cuba, the island's cultural Capital, where we will explore it's famous music scene, the markets, the beautiful public squares and the churches where Jose Marti and Fidel are buried. We will stay in a charming home (casa particular) in the historic centre of this dynamic town. Each air-conditioned single room has shower and hot water.
From Santiago the Cuba we will travel over a spectacular road, La Farola (the lighthouse road) through the Sierra del Puril to the magical small town of remote Baracoa. When Columbus first came to Baracoa in 1492, he described it as the most beautiful land he had ever set eyes upon. It also became the first Capital of Cuba from 1511-1515, but it was only possible to reach it via the sea until La Farola road was build in 1964. In Baracoa we will explore small-town life, plantations, beaches and make river walks. Baracoa also has some of the best food to be found in Cuba, a full-on sensory experience.
As we travel through The Oriente, the countryside and frequent stops allow us to meet and photograph the local campesinos y pescadores (farmers and fishermen) far away from busy Havana.
We’re passionate about teaching the different aspects of photography. A good amount of time will be spent on reviewing your work during the travel with a detailed feedback and assistance from our side. Our aim is to help you to become comfortable photographing strangers in unfamiliar environment, recognise favourable photography situations, judge the quality of natural light and adjust to low light situations. The Ebook will be provided to you to help with your learning and we’ll make sure you return home with a beautiful photo essay.
